Car crashes into a South Carolina house and one person is killed, cops say

One person was killed Sunday when a car ran off a Midlands road and crashed into a house, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Isaac Nelson, a 27-year-old Sumter County resident, died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident on Monday.

The single-vehicle collision happened in Sumter County at about 8:10 p.m. Sunday, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the Highway Patrol.

Nelson was driving a 2011 Hyundai sedan east on Queens Chapel Road, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Westbury Mill Road the Hyundai ran off the left side of the road where it flipped over several times before it hit a home, Ridgeway said.

Nelson died at the scene, according to Ridgeway.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Nelson was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.

Through April 6, at least 173 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least two people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 19 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
