Driver killed when car crashes into embankment and flips over, SC cops say

One person was killed Sunday when a car ran off a Midlands road and crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 2 a.m. in Lee County, Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover said Wednesday.

A 2013 Nissan Altima was driving south on Spring Hill Road, according to Glover. Near the intersection with Shiver Pond Road the Nissan ran off the right side of Spring Hill Road then crashed into an embankment before flipping over, Glover said.

The Nissan driver was taken to an area hospital and later died there, according to Glover.

The Lee County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.

Glover said the driver was the only person in the car, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available. Glover did not say if the crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 270 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least two people have died in Lee County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were four deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
