South Carolina man dies at hospital in Columbia following crash, coroner says

A South Carolina man was killed Tuesday in a crash with a pickup truck, officials said.

James McCoy, a 45-year-old Clarendon County resident, is the pedestrian who died in what Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident.

The collision happened at about 9 p.m. in Sumter County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

McCoy was walking south on U.S. 15 when he was hit by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado that was driving in the same direction, according to Glover. The crash happened near the intersection with Lake Wood Drive, Glover said.

McCoy was taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital in Columbia where he died, according to Baker.

Glover said the Chevy driver, who was the only person in the pickup, was not hurt. No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seat belt.

Baker said his office and the Highway Patrol will continue to investigate the crash. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Through Sunday, 278 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least six people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 19 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
