South Carolina woman dies after being airlifted from car crash, officials say

A 92-year-old woman died Monday night in the emergency room of a hospital where she was airlifted following a car crash, South Carolina officials said.

Tamassee resident Jodean W. Alexander is the woman who was killed, Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said Tuesday.

Alexander was a passenger in a 2007 Chevrolet minivan that was driving on Cheohee Valley Road at about 8:30 p.m., said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Near the intersection with Whitmire Church Road the minivan ran off the right side of Cheohee Valley Road and crashed into a tree, according to Ridgeway.

While the minivan driver was taken to a hospital in Oconee County, Alexander was flown by helicopter to Greenville Memorial hospital, where she died at 11:06 p.m. from blunt force injuries suffered in the wreck, officials said.

Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either the driver or Alexander were wearing seat belts.

Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 484 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 11 people have died in Oconee County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 15 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
