South Carolina man killed when truck crashes into utility pole, coroner says

A South Carolina man was killed early Saturday morning when a pickup truck crashed, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.

John Graham Campbell, a 61-year-old Ridgeway resident, is the driver who died in the wreck, Coroner David West said in a news release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 3:20 a.m., according to the release.

Campbell was driving a 2004 GMC pickup east on West Dekalb Street in Camden, according to the release. The pickup ran off the road and smashed into a utility pole, West said.

Campbell died at the scene, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Campbell was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the pickup to veer off the road was not available, but the collision continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and Camden Police Department.

The crash caused an hours-long power outage in Camden, officials said.

Through Sept. 21, at least 637 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 12 people have died in Kershaw County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 10 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
