Train crashes into truck in South Carolina, leaving one person dead, cops say
One person was killed Monday when a pickup truck and train were involved in a crash, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 3 p.m. in Marlboro County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
A 2001 Chevrolet S-10 was driving west on Briar Patch Road, according to Bennett. Just before the intersection with U.S. 15, the Chevy pickup was crossing train tracks where it was hit by a northbound 1970 EMD train, Bennett said. That’s near the state line separating South Carolina and North Carolina.
The Chevy driver died at the scene, according to Bennett.
The Marlboro County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.
Two people were on the train, but neither was hurt, Bennett said. No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing safety restraints.
Information about what led to the collision was not available, but it continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 656 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least four people have died in Marlboro County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were nine deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
