Man trying to escape cops on Harley-Davidson crashes and dies, SC officials say
A man who was trying to escape from law enforcement officers over the weekend was killed when the motorcycle he was driving crashed, South Carolina officials said.
Roosevelt Walker, a 46-year-old North Augusta resident, is the motorcycle rider who died, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said Sunday.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Walker was driving a 2013 Harley-Davidson south on U.S. 25/Edgefield Road as he attempted to get away from North Augusta Department of Public Safety officers, officials said. Near the intersection with Hampton Avenue, the motorcycle ran off the right side of Edgefield Road where it hit a curb and went through a parking lot before hitting another curb and crashing, according to Ridgeway.
The motorcycle was traveling at high rate of speed and Walker was ejected from the Harley-Davidson when he lost control and crashed, Ables said.
Walker was taken to Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, and died there at 11:03 p.m., according to Ables.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Walker was wearing a helmet.
Information about why Walker was trying to evade North Augusta law enforcement officers was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
An autopsy has been scheduled to be performed in Newberry, Ables said.
Through Oct. 12, at least 701 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 17 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 28 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
