South Carolina man dies after crash at busy intersection, coroner says

A South Carolina man died days after he was involved in a crash at a busy intersection, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Keith Patterson, a 73-year-old Aiken resident, died Nov. 6 at a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.

Patterson was being treated at Wellstar MCG Health hospital following a two-vehicle collision in Aiken on Nov. 1, according to the release.

At about 11:15 p.m. on Nov. 1, Patterson was driving a 2011 Ford Edge south on Whiskey Road, the coroner’s office said. At the intersection with East Pine Log Road the Ford collided with a 1996 Chevrolet SUV, according to the release. That’s an area densely packed with restaurants and retail businesses.

Patterson was taken to the hospital in Georgia where he later died from the injuries he suffered in the wreck, the corner’s office said.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if Patterson, or anyone else involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office and the Aiken Department of Public Safety.

Through Nov. 2, at least 741 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 18 people have died in Aiken County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 28 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
