Driver killed when car runs off South Carolina road and crashes, cops say
One person was killed Monday when a car ran off a road and crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 4:20 p.m. in Marlboro County, said Cpl. David Jones.
A 2005 Honda Accord was driving north on Salem Road when the car ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree then crashed into a utility pole, according to Jones.
The driver died at the scene, Jones said.
The Marlboro County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the Honda to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 753 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least seven people have died in Marlboro County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were nine deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
