Air Force member one of three killed in crash near base in SC, coroner says

Three people were killed in an overnight crash at an intersection next to a military base in the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Gabriel Hansen, 20, an active member of the Air Force died at the scene, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office. Sebastian Arnett, 33, and Thomas Arnett, 35, also died at the scene due to injuries from the collision.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about midnight Thursday in Sumter County, said Sgt. Tyler Tidwell.

A 2021 Subaru sedan was driving east on Broad Street, Tidwell said. Near an intersection, the car collided with a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was driving north on Copley Drive and both vehicles ran off the road, according to Tidwell. That’s near the southern perimeter of Shaw Air Force Base.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 771 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 20 people have died in Sumter County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 19 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
