Driver killed when pickup truck crashes into tractor trailer, SC cops say

One driver was killed and another was injured Tuesday in a crash on a popular Richland County road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:25 a.m. on Garners Ferry Road, said Master Trooper William Bennett.

Both a 2023 Kenworth tractor trailer and a 2013 Ford F-250 were driving west on a stretch of Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, according to Bennett. The tractor trailer had stopped for traffic at the intersection with Trotter Road when it was hit in the rear by the Ford pickup, Bennett said.

The pickup driver died at the scene, according to Bennett.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pickup driver.

The tractor trailer driver was injured and taken to an area hospital, Bennett said. Further information on the tractor trailer driver’s condition was not available.

Bennett said that the drivers were the only people in their respective vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seatbelts during the wreck that continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Sunday, 784 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 43 people have died in Richland County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 52 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
