Teenager killed when pickup truck crashes into trees and flips, SC officials say

One person was killed late Saturday night when a pickup truck crashed in Lexington County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Eduardo Yair Aguirre, a 19-year-old Batesburg resident, died in what Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 11:05 p.m. in the Batesburg-Leesville area of Lexington County, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.

A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado was driving south on Stone Road when it ran off the left side of the road, according to Davidson. The Chevy pickup then crashed into an embankment and hit several trees before flipping over, Davidson said.

Aguirre, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was a passenger sitting in the front seat of the Chevy, according to Fisher. Aguirre died at the scene of the wreck, according to Fisher.

The driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, Fisher said. Further information on the driver’s condition was not available.

There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about what caused the Chevy to veer off the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

Through Nov. 23, at least 784 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 34 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 50 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.
