Person was lying in the road when they were hit by a car and killed, SC cops say
A person was killed Sunday night when they were hit by a car on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The deadly collision happened at about 6:10 p.m. in Sumter County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
A person, who Glover called a pedestrian, was lying in the westbound lane of U.S. 378, near the intersection with U.S. 401. A 2012 Toyota Corolla was driving west on U.S. 378 and crashed into the pedestrian, according to Glover.
The pedestrian died at the scene, Glover said.
The Sumter County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.
Glover said neither the Toyota driver nor a passenger in the car were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the people in the Toyota were wearing seatbelts.
Information about why the pedestrian was lying in the road was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Dec. 28, 2025, at least 879 people had died on South Carolina roads last year, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
At least 25 people died in Sumter County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data.
