South Carolina man killed when SUV runs off road and crashes into trees, cops say
One person was killed Monday night when an SUV crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Andrew S. Prevatte, a 60-year-old McCormick resident, is the person who died in what the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office called an accident.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7:15 p.m. in Greenwood County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
Prevatte was driving a 2025 Chevrolet SUV south on S.C. 10/McCormick Highway, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with U.S. 221 the Chevy ran off the left side of S.C. 10 and hit a ditch and a tree before flipping then crashing into another ditch and tree, Bennett said.
Prevatte suffered blunt force trauma and died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.
Bennett said Prevatte was the only person in the Chevy SUV, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the SUV to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through Sunday, five people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. At least 879 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
This was the new year’s first deadly crash reported in Greenwood County, where at least five people died in crashes in 2025, according to DPS data.
