Driver killed when SUV and minivan crash on I-20, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed recently when an SUV and minivan were involved in a crash on a stretch of Interstate 20 running through Richland County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The collision happened at about 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 8, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.
Both a 2009 Toyota minivan and a 2014 Jeep Liberty were driving west on I-20, according to Ridgeway. Near the 70-mile marker, in Columbia, the Jeep SUV changed lanes and struck the Toyota, Ridgeway said.
The Jeep SUV then ran off the right side of I-20 and flipped over, according to Ridgeway.
The Jeep SUV driver died at the scene, Ridgeway said.
As of Sunday, the Richland County Coroner’s Office had not publicly identified the Jeep SUV driver.
Ridgeway said the Toyota driver was not hurt, but a passenger in the minivan was injured and taken to Prisma Health Richland hospital. Further information on the passenger’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
There was on word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Jan. 4, at least five people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
This was the new year’s first deadly crash reported in Richland County, where at least 48 people died in crashes in 2025, according to DPS data.
