Lawnmower rider killed in crash with car on South Carolina road, coroner says

One person was killed Monday and another was hospitalized following a crash between a lawnmower and car, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Joseph Green, a 67-year-old Pennsylvania resident, died from injures he suffered in the wreck, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The collision happened at about 6:30 p.m. in Berkeley County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the Highway Patrol.

Green was riding the lawnmower, which was in the 1200 block of Old Highway 6, when it was hit by a 2013 Honda Civic that was driving west on the road, according to Glover. That’s in Cross, in the area between Prince Lane and Cross High School.

Green died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.

The Honda driver was hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Glover. Further information on the Honda driver’s condition was not available.

Glover said that Green and the Honda driver were the only people in their respective vehicles, and no other injuries were reported.

There was no word if the Honda driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

Through Sunday, 14 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

This was the new year’s first deadly crash reported in Berkeley County, where at least 34 people died in crashes in 2025, according to DPS data.
