SC man killed when SUV and truck crashed at intersection identified by coroner
One person was killed Saturday in a crash at an intersection in the Midlands, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Josue Garcia Canales, a 25-year-old Camden resident, died in what Kershaw County Coroner David West called an accident.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 1:55 p.m. in Kershaw County, said Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.
A 2025 Chevrolet pickup truck was driving south on S.C. 903 and a 2013 GMC Terrain was going west on Mt. Pisgah Road, according to Davidson. The vehicles collided at the intersection, Davidson said.
Canales, a passenger sitting in the front seat of the SUV died at the scene, according to West.
In addition to Canales, Davidson said there also was a driver along with a passenger in the back seat of the SUV. There was both a driver and a passenger in the Chevy, according to Davidson. Information on their conditions was not available, but no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the vehicles to collide was not available, but the wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
Through Jan. 11, at least 14 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
This was the new year’s first deadly crash reported in Kershaw County, where at least 15 people died in crashes in 2025, according to DPS data.
