South Carolina man killed in crash not far from I-95, coroner says

A South Carolina man who has the same name as a famous actor was killed Monday in a crash, according to the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.

John Goodman, a 44-year-old Sumter County resident, died in what Coroner Robbie Baker called an accident Tuesday in a news release.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. Monday, according to the release.

The crash happened at the intersection of Yarborough Road and Goodman Road, Baker said. That’s on the northeastern edge of Woods Bay State Park and about 4 miles from Exit 141 on I -95.

Goodman was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital where he died form the injuries he suffered in the wreck, according to the release.

There was no word if Goodman was driving the vehicle, or if he was wearing a seatbelt.

Information about the crash was not available, but it is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Baker said.

Through Sunday, 106 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.

At least five people have died in Sumter County crashes this year, and 25 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
