Georgia man dies when concrete truck rolls over in crash, SC officials say
A Georgia man was killed Monday in a crash in South Carolina, officials said.
Robert James Maxwell — a 56-year-old Hartwell, Georgia resident — is the driver who died in what Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis called an accident.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:05 a.m., said Master Trooper Mitchell ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Maxwell was driving a 2019 Mack concrete truck south on Friendship Road, according to Ridgeway. Near the intersection with Rodeo Drive the truck ran off the right side of Friendship Road, where it rolled over, Ridgeway said.
Maxwell died at the scene, Addis said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Maxwell was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about why the truck veered off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 158 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least four people have died in Oconee County crashes this year, and 17 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
