Driver trying to escape police was killed crashing into brick wall, SC cops say
One person was killed early Sunday morning trying to escape from police before crashing a car, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 5 a.m. in Greenville County, said Cpl. Nick Pye.
The driver of a 2013 Nissan sedan was attempting to avoid law enforcement and was heading north on North Main Street, according to Pye. Near the intersection with Kenwood Lane, in Greenville, the Nissan ran off the right side of the road and crashed into a brick wall, Pye said.
The driver died as a result of the crash, according to Pye.
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as 22-year-old Greenville resident David Hernandez, WHNS reported.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if Hernandez was wearing a seatbelt.
The Greenville Police Department said it tried to stop the Nissan because officers saw it was driving recklessly, WYFF reported. When Hernandez refused to pull over, police said they did not begin to chase the Nissan because of the driver’s erratic behavior behind the wheel, according to the TV station.
While the Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, Pye said what led up to the wreck is being handled by police.
Through March 29, at least 173 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 17 people have died in Greenville County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
