Driver killed in early morning crash on I-77, South Carolina cops say
One person was killed early Sunday morning in a crash on Interstate 77, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The two-vehicle collision happened at about 5:45 a.m. in Richland County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
Both a 2021 Chevrolet Camaro and a 2019 Mazda CX-30 were driving north on I-77, according to Glover. At the 13-mile marker the Chevy ran off the right side of I-77 and crashed into a guardrail, Glover said. That’s in Columbia, near Fort Jackson.
Debris from the Chevy’s crash struck the Mazda, according to Glover.
The Chevy driver was taken to an area hospital and later died there, Glover said.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the Chevy driver.
Glover said the Mazda driver was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
There was no word if anyone involved in the wreck was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about why the Chevy veered off I-77 was not available, but the crash continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through April 5, at least 195 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 13 people have died in Richland County crashes this year, and 48 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
