13-year-old middle school student dies in crash in wooded area, SC coroner says
A South Carolina teenager was killed Monday night in a crash involving an ATV, according to the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.
Cannon Turner, a 13-year-old Ridgeway resident, is the teen who died in what Coroner David West called an accident.
At about 7:15 p.m., emergency dispatch received a call about an ATV crash in a wooded area off Buck Hill Road, West said Tuesday in a news release. That’s near the area where the Wateree River and Lake Wateree merge.
Cannon, a student at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School, died at the scene, West said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the victim was wearing a helmet or any other protective gear.
Information about the single-vehicle crash was not available, and West did not say if it’s under investigation.
Through Sunday, 195 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least four people have died in Kershaw County crashes this year, and 15 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
