Man killed in accident outside popular mall in Columbia, SC coroner says
A South Carolina man was killed Sunday morning in a crash outside a popular shopping mall, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.
Standly Stampson, a 27-year-old Columbia resident, is the person who died in what Coroner Margaret Fisher called an accident.
At about 10:40 a.m., Stampson was riding a bicycle in the parking lot at Columbiana Centre shopping mall in the 100 block of Columbiana Circle, Fisher said in a news release. That’s in the popular shopping and dining Harbison district, which is in a part of Columbia that’s inside Lexington County.
Stampson was cycling south in the parking lot when he collided with a vehicle that was driving west on Columbiana Circle, according to the release.
Stampson, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead because of the injuries he suffered in the crash, the coroner’s office said.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, according to the release. There was no word if that driver was wearing a seatbelt.
No other injuries were reported in the collision that continues to be investigated by both the coroner’s office and Columbia Police Department.
Through May 3, at least 261 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 13 people have died in Lexington County crashes this year, and 40 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
