Driver dies after car runs off SC road and crashes into tree, cops say
One person was killed Sunday afternoon when a car crashed into a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 4:45 p.m. in Anderson County, Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover said Monday in a news release.
A 1999 Nissan Maxima was driving south on Abbeville Highway, according to Glover. Near the intersection with Middleton Road the car ran off the left side of Abbeville Highway and crashed into a tree, Glover said.
The driver, who was the only person in the car, was taken to an area hospital and died, according to Glover.
The Anderson County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the driver.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt.
Information about what caused the car to veer off the road was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 340 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 17 people have died in Anderson County crashes this year, and 37 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
