One person killed in nighttime crash on South Carolina road, cops say
One person was killed in a Monday night crash on a Midlands road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The single-vehicle collision happened at about 9:30 p.m. in Orangeburg County, said Master Trooper William Bennett.
A 2003 Nissan Altima was driving south on Lake Edisto Road, according to Bennett. Near the intersection with Airy Hall Drive the Nissan hit a pedestrian who was walking north in the southbound lane of Lake Edisto Road, Bennett said.
The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital and died there, according to Bennett.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the pedestrian.
The Nissan driver, who was the only person in the car, was not hurt, Bennett said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the driver was wearing a seatbelt, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.
Through Sunday, 340 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least 13 people have died in Orangeburg County crashes this year, and 31 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
