South Carolina man dies in hospital after crash at intersection, coroner says
One person died in a South Carolina hospital following a crash in the city of Clemson, officials said.
Harrison Ray, a 59-year-old Liberty resident, died almost two weeks after he was involved in a wreck that Pickens County Coroner Andrew Wilson called an accident.
The two-vehicle collision happened June 6 in Pickens County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
At about 2:45 p.m., Ray was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer east on West Lane, according to Bolt. A 2003 Dodge pickup truck was driving north on S.C. 93 and the driver disregarded a traffic signal at the intersection where East Lane becomes Cambridge Drive and crashed into the side of the Chevy SUV, Bolt said.
Both drivers, who were the only people in each of their respective vehicles, were hurt and taken to an area hospital, according to Bolt.
On June 18, Ray died at Greenville Memorial Hospital, Wilson said.
Further information on the pickup driver’s condition was not available, and there was on word if that driver faces any criminal charges.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if either of the drivers were wearing seatbelts, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol and coroner’s office.
Through June 14, at least 376 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2026, according to the state Department of Public Safety. A minimum of 914 people were killed in collisions in South Carolina in 2025, DPS data shows.
At least nine people have died in Pickens County crashes this year, and 16 people died in wrecks there in 2025, according to DPS data.
