Forecasters have issued new winter weather warnings for the Columbia area. What to know
Richland and Lexington counties are under a winter storm warning until 7 a.m. Saturday, the National Weather Service announced Friday afternoon.
Up to 2 inches of snow and a tenth-inch of ice accumulation is in the forecast for the Midlands Friday night into Saturday morning. The National Weather Service upgraded the warning from a winter weather advisory Friday around 3 p.m.
Fairfield and Sumter counties have also been upgraded to a winter storm warning.
Snow has not accumulated in Columbia since January 2017, when the area had less than an inch.
This is the second time in as many weeks that South Carolina is bracing for winter weather. The Upstate was blanketed with between 4-8 inches of snow Sunday, which closed schools, businesses and miles of highway in the region.
Many school districts conducted virtual class Friday in anticipation of the weather.
Snow is expected to start falling after 6 p.m. Friday evening, likely beginning as a wintry mix. Rain has already arrived.
