In the height of a sweltering Southern summer, it can sometimes become easy to assume every day is the hottest in South Carolina’s history.

Thanks to research conducted at various weather stations throughout the state collected by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, we know when and where the Palmetto State has experienced record high temperatures over the last century.

While the data shows temperatures are up in general, such as on Columbia’s 79 degrees Fahrenheit Christmas, heat has a rich history in South Carolina, with many of the state’s temperature peaks having been decades ago.
