Letters: Black voters should fear Democrats

Michael D. McDermott recently worried about black voters losing their right to vote if Donald Trump becomes our president (“Trump a huge threat to black voters,” Sept. 7). He resurrects the images of Pitchfork Ben Tillman and Strom Thurmond, both of whom are dead and can do nothing. I would ask Mr. McDermott to consider the political positions of the Democrat of all Democrats, Dick Harpootlian, who is still with us and who once said he did not want to buy the black vote, but just rent it for one day. Where is the fear from that comment?

Under the Obama administration, the number of blacks on welfare has increased. I’ve never been on welfare, but I imagine to receive free stuff one has to go to some government office and enroll. If people can get to the welfare office, why can’t they get to the Transportation Department to get a free photo ID?
