Letters: Durham Carter served his community faithfully
Humanity has lost a great man in the death of Durham Carter. Mr. Carter, a native son of Columbia, loved people and cared greatly about the quality of life of his city. His life exemplified the best in a human being in both words and actions. We are all beneficiaries of Durham Carter’s passion for others, regardless of race, gender, income or position.
Durham Carter, longtime Columbia neighborhood leader, dies
He lived a life committed to inclusion, not exclusion. He conscientiously celebrated diversity and worked diligently to help those who found themselves powerless. He worked on many community boards and organizations, including the Greater Columbia Community Relations Council, and believed above all else that he could make a personal and collective difference in the life of his community. He worked for the betterment of all people.
Durham Carter’s legacy of goodwill and community harmony will be long remembered and appreciated by the movers and shakers of Columbia. But most importantly, the citizens of the Martin Luther King Jr. Park Community will remember him with fondness and appreciation. They knew him as a neighbor, friend and community organizer who never stopped caring. They knew that in him they had a loyal advocate for fairness and respect.
Today we remember Mr. Carter as a man who lived out his faith in caring for and helping others. We will miss the likes of this good man who, though short in stature, cast a long shadow for brotherhood and justice.
