Joe Burrow, LSU win the college football national championship, beating Clemson 42-25

The Clemson Tigers face the LSU Tigers in the College Football Playoff national championship game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The game is at 8 p.m. Monday on ESPN. 1:14 a.m.: FINAL SCORE: 42-25, LSU. Victory formation for LSU. Joe Burrow takes a knee, and Clemson’s 29-game winning streak comes to an end as the SEC’s Tigers win the national championship.

12:09 a.m.: Trevor Lawrence fumbles and LSU recovers. That should just about do it.

12:06 a.m.: LSU still leading Clemson 42-25 with 4:46 to go. Trevor Lawrence remains off target.

11:39 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Joe Burrow makes it look too easy. A 24-yard touchdown pass to Terrace Marshall gives LSU 42-25 lead with 12:08 remaining in regulation. Burrow has five touchdown passes tonight and an FBS record 60 touchdown passes this season.

11:36 p.m.: The fourth quarter is finally starting. Children should be in bed.

11:28 p.m.: Tee Higgins back in the game for Clemson.

11:27 p.m.: On fourth-and-4, LSU’s Cade York misses a 45-yard field goal.

11:10 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Make that two scores for Thaddeus Moss. The LSU tight end who played his senior year of high school in Charlotte caught a 4-yard pass from Joe Burrow with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Burrow now has four touchdown passes and 343 passing yards. LSU has scored four touchdowns in as many trips to the red zone. LSU leads Clemson, 35-25.

11:06 p.m.: Clemson wide receiver Tee Higgins went to the locker room with about 7 minutes remaining in the third quarter. We’ll keep you updated on his status.

10:46 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Clemson running back Travis Etienne, who broke the school’s career rushing record earlier in the night, finally finds the end zone on a 3-yard run on a zone-read play. Clemson went for 2 and converted (Lawrence pass to Rodgers), cutting LSU’s lead to 28-25 with 10:49 left in the third quarter.

10:44 p.m.: Some early momentum for Clemson, forcing LSU to punt on its opening possession. Tee Higgins took a bruising hit on a first-down catch and had to leave the game, but only missed a play.

10:14 p.m.: Joe Burrow is just picking on the Clemson secondary. LSU’s Heisman Trophy-winning touchdown has passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns in the first half and rushed for another score. His target of choice has been La’Marr Chase, who has six catches for 162 yards and two scores. The ACC’s Tigers simply don’t have an answer. Trevor Lawrence is 12 of 22 for 176 yards and has rushed for a touchdown. LSU gets the ball coming out of halftime. Clemson desperately needs to get a stop.

10:08 p.m. TOUCHDOWN! LSU’s offense is on fire. A 95-yard drive to end the first half is capped by a Joe Burrow 6-yard TD pass to Thaddeus Moss, son of NFL great Randy Moss. It’s their third TD of the quarter. It’s 28-17 LSU.

9:48 p.m. TOUCHDOWN! LSU marches 87 yards and scores on a Joe Burrow 14-yard pass to Ja’Marr Chase. The LSU receiver is up to 5 catches for 147 and 2 TDs, with 5:19 to go in the half.

9:33 p.m. TOUCHDOWN! LSU didn’t want to settle for a field goal, calling timeout to draw up a 3-yard touchdown rush for QB Joe Burrow on third and goal. The drive was highlighted by a 56-yard Burrow-to-Ja’Marr Chase pass. It’s 17-14 Clemson in the second quarter.

9:23 p.m. TOUCHDOWN! Clemson takes a 17-7 lead in the second quarter on a 36-yard run by wide receiver Tee Higgins. The drive included a 29-yard rush by Travis Etienne and a 24-yard catch by Justyn Ross.

9:11 p.m. FIELD GOAL! B.T. Potter, who was benched at one point this season by Dabo Swinney, connects for a career long 52-yard field goal early in the second quarter to give Clemson a 10-7 lead. Potter was 12-for-20 on the season entering the game.

8:59 p.m. TOUCHDOWN! LSU ties the game at 7 with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Joe Burrow to Ja’Marr Chase, a scoring drive that took four plays and 1:36. It’s 7-7 through the 1st quarter.

8:52 p.m.: ESPN streaming app is back up and running. The panic can end.

8:45 p.m. TOUCHDOWN! Clemson scores first as QB Trevor Lawrence runs for a 1-yard score. On the drive, tight end Braden Galloway had his first catch of the year, officially a 27-yard pickup after a penalty. Clemson leads 7-0 with 6:34 left in the first quarter. (Watch the play here)

8:41 p.m.: For those watching at home, the ESPN streaming app is currently down. If you’re watching on cable, you should be fine. ESPN advertised this game would be broadcast in 4K, but for now, you’re greeted with an error screen.

8:38 p.m. The game see its fourth punt in the early going, two by each team. LSU started drives on its own 11- and own 1-yard line. The biggest play so far is a 35-yard pass from Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence to Justyn Ross. After two possessions each, Clemson has 45 yards to LSU’s 6.

8:17 p.m. The crowd slants solidly LSU, but Clemson it holding its own in the noise department. LSU won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. Clemson will receive the opening kickoff. LSU coach Ed Orgeron told ESPN’s Tom Rinadli pregame: “They’re a good team, we’re a good team, let’s battle. Go Tigers!”

8:10 p.m.: President Trump is on the field as Lauren Daigle, a two-time Grammy winner and Christian artist, sings the national anthem. After the anthem, Trump clapped vigorously as a massive U.S. flag was rolled back up. Hype videos played and the stadium was alight with cell phones glittering in unison.

5:10 p.m.: Clemson arrives, led by Dabo Swinney off the bus. Christian Wilkins, Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence and Austin Bryant arrived with the team. Dabo Swinney walks the length of the field and as he got to the LSU end zone was greeted to a “F*** you, Dabo” chant.
