How Will Muschamp balances two important things on Friday nights: His team and his son

The logistical problem for South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp isn’t really much of one.

He has responsibilities the night before a game, as his team takes to a hotel per the modern traditions of college teams. But across town, his son Jackson is a starting quarterback for Hammond School.

He was asked how he balances it, and he sounds as if it’s not an issue.

“I could stay at the hotel room and watch a college football game on the west coast, or I could go to watch Hammond play,” Will Muschamp said. “So I’d rather watch Hammond play. And then I go check curfew at 10 o’clock, make sure all of our guys are ready to go for the next day. It’s awesome to be able to see your son play.”

Jackson Muschamp is in his first season as an offensive starter for the Skyhawks. Last year, he played safety and helped lead the team to a state title.

In two games this season, he’s thrown for 367 yardsand five touchdowns, completing 25 of 43 passes. His team is 2-0, with a tight win against Charlotte Country Day and a blowout of Trinity-Byrnes.

Will Muschamp will get his first run at this on Friday, as Hammond visits Ben Lippen the night before his squad plays host to Coastal Carolina to open the season.

Will Muschamp was asked how impressed he was getting to watch his son playing high school quarterback. He delivered a particularly coach-like answer.

“They’ve won,” Will Muschamp said. “They’re 2-0, so I’m really impressed.
