South Carolina’s Bobo, Muschamp check in on top national QB recruit

South Carolina’s ties to four-star QB Gunner Stockton are growing deeper.

The Rabun County passer has worked with George Bobo, father of Gamecocks offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. He also plays for Jaybo Shaw, brother of USC legend Connor Shaw, and played for both Shaws’ father before that. Connor Shaw recently took an off-field role with the Gamecocks.

And Tuesday, Mike Bobo and Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp dropped by Stockton’s high school in North Georgia.

Staffers from UNC also visited that day. Stockton is the No. 2 player in the country in the early 2022 247 Sports composite rankings.

USC offered him as a freshman, and the 6-foot-1, 196 pounder with offers from Alabama, Penn State and Georgia produced a dominant sophomore season. In a 12-1 campaign, he completed 71.6 percent of his passes for 3,473 yards, 43 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 1,126 yards and 19 scores.

Colorado State had offered him when Mike Bobo was head coach there.

The Gamecocks have not offered any QBs since Bobo was hired in early December. They head into next season with Ryan Hilinski as a returning starter, plus grad transfer Collin Hill and incoming freshman Luke Doty.
