Will Muschamp’s statement on Jordan Burch finally signing with South Carolina

South Carolina football’s wait was over. Jordan Burch had signed.

The school’s social media channels fired off a barrage of videos, graphics and other content around him. And then Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp released a statement.

The coach, who attended Burch’s games as a parent of one of his teammates, thanked Burch’s mother for entrusting her son to USC. The news capped a wild recruitment that saw Burch commit to South Carolina at the start of the early signing period, not sign that day and not sign Wednesday, the traditional National Signing Day.

But he’s in the fold now.

“It’s a great way to close out our 2020 signing class with Jordan Burch deciding to stay home and play for the University of South Carolina,” Muschamp’s statement said. “He is a wonderful person and I’m excited that he will be part of the Gamecock family. We really appreciate his mother, Henri, trusting us and sending her son to the in-state school. Jordan is an explosive athlete, extremely smart and versatile player who can do a lot of things on the football field and I can’t wait to coach him.”

The “the” in “the in-state school” was italicized by the school in the statement.

Muschamp twice had to walk into signing day press conferences unable to talk about the local player who was pledged to his 2020 class — by NCAA rules, coaches can’t talk about unsigned players.

Burch is the No. 8 recruit in the country at 6-foot-5, 275 pounds. He joins the roster alongside Hammond high school teammate Alex Huntley, a four-star recruit in his own right, and a pair of walk-ons.
