Former Gamecocks lineman headed to in-state program, joining his brother

It didn’t take former South Carolina offensive lineman Summie Carlay to find a new home.

The Laurens High School product announced Tuesday he’s headed to The Citadel to pursue his MBA. He spent three seasons as a Gamecocks and earned his degree this spring.

His younger brother Wes redshirted as a freshman with the Bulldogs last season.

Summie Carlay has two years to play.

A member of USC’s 2017 class, he redshirted his first year on campus, didn’t play his second year and was part of the field goal team his third season in 2019.

He was a three-star recruit ranked No. 598 in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He had offers from North Carolina State and Coastal Carolina, and he meshed well with then-offensive line coach Shawn Elliott.

Carlay was a sport and entertainment management major. He made the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll three times in three seasons.

South Carolina last hosted The Citadel in 2015, an upset loss at the end of a 3-9 season. They are not scheduled to play in future seasons.

The Bulldogs went 6-6 last season. They run a triple-option offense.
