Steve Spurrier predicted good things for Gamecocks QB Jason Brown months ago
The Head Ball Coach saw it coming.
Steve Spurrier, who coached at South Carolina from 2005-15 and Florida from 1990-2001, predicted success for Gamecocks quarterback Jason Brown as early as the spring game.
Spurrier told WIS-TV sports director Rick Henry that he thought Brown would be USC’s starting quarterback after watching him in the 2021 spring game, Henry reported Saturday on social media.
“It was good talking to the HBC before the game,” Henry posted to Twitter. “Coach Spurrier told me he thought Jason Brown would be the starting QB after watching him in the spring game. The man does know a thing or two about the quarterback position.”
Brown, a senior transfer from FCS St. Francis (Pennsylvania), flashed his potential against the Gators in his first career SEC start, completing 14 of 24 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns and leading the Gamecocks to a 40-17 victory over Florida.
Brown had a strong outing in April’s spring game as the fourth quarterback in the rotation, going 3 of 5 passing for 47 yards and a touchdown in one half, then throwing another touchdown in a second half that only featured situational work.
Brown originally fell down the depth chart after starter Luke Doty suffered a foot injury in fall camp and Zeb Noland moved from graduate assistant coach to quarterback. He was the third-string quarterback before Doty’s season-ending injury against Vanderbilt.
Brown saw his first meaningful snaps in the fourth quarter of the Gamecocks’ 44-14 throttling at the hands of Texas A&M. He started the Florida game after Noland underwent a minor left meniscus procedure during the bye week.
Spurrier was in the press box for the South Carolina-Florida matchup and spent some time in Columbia for a fundraising event for state Attorney General Alan Wilson on Friday night.
Spurrier was joined by former Virginia Tech head football coach Frank Beamer (who is also the father of current Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer), Gamecock running back great George Rogers and former Florida Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel at the event.
