South Carolina is down one skill position player before the season begins.

Wide receiver/tight end Chad Terrell is out for the season with a torn ACL, head coach Shane Beamer told reporters on Tuesday.

“Really, really hate it for that young man,” Beamer said.

Terrell has been slowed by injuries for much of his career in Columbia. The Georgia product tore the ACL in his left knee in 2018 and his right knee in 2020.

Despite that, Terrell appeared in 27 contests over his five-plus years at South Carolina, while working at both tight end and receiver. He has seven career receptions for 76 yards.

“He’ll still continue to have a role on this team,” Beamer said. “I’ve got so much respect for him, a guy that was in his sixth year in the program that had come back from two ACLs, accepted a position change in spring practice, really excelled in that role as a tight end for us and had a good preseason and had put himself in position to play and have a role on the field on this year’s team.”

Terrell came to South Carolina as a three-star recruit in the class of 2017. He was rated the No. 394 player and No. 57 receiver in the class, per the 247Sports Composite.

He was a bright spot in USC’s 2022 spring game with four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Whether or not Terrell attempts a third ACL comeback is to be determined, Beamer said.

“I have so much respect for Chad, the way he has battled and put himself in position to play,” Beamer said. “He’s still heavily involved with our team. He has a role, without a doubt, he just won’t be playing on Saturdays for us this upcoming season.”
