All-American Jaylan Foster back at South Carolina in support role. Here are the details
Former South Carolina standout Jaylan Foster is back in Columbia.
Foster, who earned All-American honors last fall after starting his career at USC as a walk-on, is back with the program in an official capacity, head coach Shane Beamer said.
Beamer noted they haven’t settled on a title for Foster and that, under NCAA rules, he’s not technically coaching, but he is involved as a staff member.
“He’s involved with us and around the program and is an asset for sure for all the obvious reasons,” Beamer said. “He’s great with those young defensive backs and all the guys.”
The Duncan product started his career at Gardner-Webb before transferring to South Carolina. Foster spent the bulk of his time at USC working on special teams and in a reserve role before breaking out last fall.
During the 2022 season, he led the Gamecocks in tackles and notched five interceptions. He was named a Walter Camp second team All-American and received third team All-American honors from Phil Steele.
Foster was reportedly slotted to participate in mini camps with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles. The expectation is he’s continuing to stay in shape in case an NFL shot were to come.
South Carolina has added a handful of former players to the coaching staff in recent months. Ex-Gamecocks defensive back Jaylin Dickerson medically retired from football in March before becoming a student assistant.
Former South Pointe head coach and USC standout DeVonte Holloman was also officially added to the staff as an analyst on March 14.
