Shane Beamer reaffirms: There’s no quit among these Gamecocks

Shane Beamer after the 48-7 loss to Georgia in September was asked if he sensed any “give-up” among the team.

“Hell no,” he responded.

A month later, South Carolina (5-2, 2-2 SEC) clinched its fourth-straight victory when it beat the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday for the first time in school history.

Beamer certainly remembered that specific question from the Georgia game and spoke Saturday night to the state of his team’s confidence after its 30-24 win.

He cited the Gamecocks’ road win against Kentucky being the team’s first win in Lexington since 2012, the historic first-win over Texas A&M and the team’s first four-game winning streak since 2013.

“That look like that team’s quit?” Beamer said after Saturday’s game.

South Carolina was a home underdog against the Aggies and against the Wildcats two weeks ago on the road. The team lost its first two conference games but brought its SEC record back to .500 against Texas A&M.

USC got off to explosive starts in both games. Against Kentucky, the team took an early lead with a fumble recovery on the first play that led to a touchdown.

Saturday had just as quick a start, and an even more electric one. Xavier Legette scored a 100-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff, and Darius Rush returned an interception for 59 yards during Texas A&M’s first drive to set USC up for a field goal.

The team held its opponents to 17 points per game in its four-game winning streak.

“We got a bunch of freaking fighters on this team that love each other, play for one another and care about each other,” Beamer said. “And it showed out there tonight. As ugly as it was at times, they never flinched and they just kept coming back.”
