South Carolina losing QB Dante Reno to transfer portal
South Carolina is losing a quarterback to the transfer portal.
On Thursday, On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett reported that Gamecocks redshirt freshman quarterback Dante Reno plans to enter the transfer portal.
Reno quoted On3’s social media post on X, saying: “God’s timing! Can’t wait for what’s next.”
Reno, a former three-star prospect from Connecticut, was South Carolina’s fourth-string quarterback last season and appeared briefly in only one game.
Coming into the 2025 spring, Reno was competing for the backup quarterback job. And it seemed he had a chance, considering he had a year under his belt at USC while others — Ohio State transfer Air Noland and true freshman Cutter Woods — were new to South Carolina.
But during the spring game on Friday, he played sparingly and was the garnet-team backup to Luke Doty.
With Reno departing, South Carolina now has four scholarship quarterbacks: LaNorris Sellers, Noland, Woods and Doty.
Sellers is the starter of course, but the intriguing question heading into the summer will be around the No. 2 spot.
Doty, who has started games at quarterback for South Carolina in the past, has mostly played wide receiver the past two seasons but looked sharp during the spring game. As did Woods, the Westside alum who launched a beautiful 51-yard pass and seemed incredibly poised in his first college semester.
And while Noland struggled a bit in the spring game, the former four-star prospect has the talent to win the top backup job this fall.
