Will there be noticeable changes in Mike Shula’s offense at South Carolina?

In Shane Beamer’s time at South Carolina, every season has come with major offensive change.

Either the Gamecocks were breaking in a new offensive coordinator or a new starting quarterback. It’s as if there is a limit to the amount of offensive continuity the Gamecocks are allowed to have.

When offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield returned for a second season in 2022, the Gamecocks had a new QB in Spencer Rattler. When Rattler returned to Columbia for a final season, he had a new OC (Dowell Loggains). Then Loggains stayed and LaNorris Sellers became USC’s starting QB.

And now Sellers is back and Loggains is gone.

But one could argue 2025 brings the most offensive stability of Beamer’s tenure.

Not only do the Gamecocks return Sellers, who finished the 2025 in such dominant fashion that the offseason has been filled with Heisman and NFL Draft talk, but South Carolina’s new offensive coordinator Mike Shula was on staff last year in an analyst role that, essentially, amounted to him being the quarterbacks coach.

Because of that, and thinking about how Shula called the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl as OC, Shula’s offense might look very similar to Loggains’ in 2024.

“Schematically,” Beamer said of Shula’s offense at SEC Media Days, “we haven’t changed a lot, but we’ve tweaked some things, certainly, terminology-wise in some of the stuff we are doing in the run game and pass game. Hopefully, streamline some things and make the whole offense better.”

The only major change Shula has expressed is for Sellers to to be quicker with the football, to time his drops better and only scramble when he has to. Some might think that means Shula wants to turn Sellers into a pocket passer, to take away the scrambling ability that makes him so lethal.

What it really means is this: If Shula calls a pass play, hopefully it works. You know, hopefully the blocking holds up. Hopefully the receivers get open. And hopefully Sellers can deliver a completion.

Whenever those first two things don’t go to plan, of course Shula wants Sellers to take off and make magic; but that can never be the whole plan.

The goal for Sellers is be a great passer and a great runner, a goal Shula has told him comes down to great footwork.

“Cleaner footwork is better throws and better pocket awareness,” Sellers said.

And that should lead to a better South Carolina offense. Similar, but sharper.
