New face added to South Carolina quarterbacks room
There was a new guy in green as South Carolina began its preseason camp on Friday.
Green jerseys are what quarterbacks — and only quarterbacks — wear during the Gamecocks’ practices. And the new QB in Columbia is Brandon Cunningham, a true freshman who graduated from T.L. Hanna High School in May.
Cunningham, who wore No. 34 — committed to USC in June as a preferred walk-on, joining a quarterback room that includes LaNorris Sellers, Luke Doty, Air Noland, Cutter Woods and walk-on Jimmy Francis.
What’s interesting is that Cunningham is listed an an “athlete” on the Gamecocks’ official roster. He and Doty are the only two players on USC’s roster with that designation, and both are starting off camp at quarterback.
As a senior for T.L. Hanna, Cunningham started as quarterback and became an all-region selection. He was also a track standout, running the 100m in 10.5 seconds and the 200m in 21.5 seconds.
If nothing else, Cunningham brings the Gamecocks’ quarterback room back to the depth it had in the spring.
If you remember, South Carolina went through the entirety of spring ball with six quarterbacks on the roster. But soon after spring, redshirt freshman Dante Reno transferred to Yale, leaving South Carolina with five QBs heading into the summer.
It’s unclear if Cunningham will stick at quarterback permanently — likely working with the scout team — or if the Gamecocks will lean into his “athlete” tag and move him around to different positions.
