USC practice report: Update on QBs. Rahsul Faison not spotted
A day after it held a scrimmage at Williams-Brice Stadium, South Carolina held its ninth practice of preseason camp.
South Carolina let the media observe six periods Sunday evening, which amounted to about 35 minutes of practice time.
Here are some notes:
>> We did not observe running back Rahsul Faison. A South Carolina spokesperson was not aware why Faison wasn’t there, neither was a source The State spoke with — though the source said they didn’t believe it had anything to do with his ongoing NCAA eligibility case.
>> Midway through practice, quarterbacks LaNorris Sellers and Luke Doty were working directly with Mike Shula near the end zone. Closer to midfield, the other quarterbacks were working through drills with assistant quarterbacks coach Davis Koetter watching them. Air Noland was taking the first reps in that group with Cutter Woods and Jimmy Francis behind him.
>> Tight end Maurice Brown was not wearing pads and was off to the side. Defensive back Jalon Kilgore and freshman receiver Jordon Gidron were wearing pads, but also working with trainers off to the side early in practice. That will be something to monitor — especially with Kilgore, who is expected to be the Gamecocks’ starting nickel. Edge rusher JT Geer was in a blue, non-contact jersey but still participating in drills.
>> During a good amount of the special teams periods Sunday, Doty was working with all the special-teamers while the quarterbacks were on a separate field running through drills. Shane Beamer has said that even though Doty is a full-time QB, he’s going to still participate with special teams.
>> Perhaps we’re just watching at the absolute wrong times, but during both Friday and Sunday’s practice we observed a good amount of drops from the wide receivers. Probably shouldn’t read much into that this early in August, but it has been noticeable.
>> During individual drills, defensive line coach Travian Robertson spent a long time coaching up freshman Christian Ingram on how he wanted him to hit the sled. Ingram was almost hitting it vertically and hardly moving the bag, which led Robertson to spend time explaining it — and even demonstrating it himself — how to get leverage, bend your knees and hit it properly.
>> NFL teams with representatives that were present: Packers, Titans, Broncos, Seahawks, Ravens and Raiders.
>> Sunday was the final media viewing period of the preseason. Beamer is scheduled to address reporters again on Tuesday.
