About South Carolina
The Gamecocks are now 2-2 (0-2 SEC) after a 29-20 loss against the Missouri Tigers in USC’s first conference road game of the season. USC’s defense gave up 285 yards rushing and two touchdowns in a slow-burning collapse in the fourth quarter. South Carolina started the year 2-0 before taking on Vanderbilt at home in the SEC opener and losing 31-7. Against the Commodores, USC struggled to get going on offense, particularly after LaNorris Sellers went out of the game with an injury, and after the team had multiple defensive lapses.
About Kentucky
The Wildcats are coming off of an open week and are 2-1 (0-1 SEC) to start the season. The trip to Williams-Brice Stadium will be the first road game for Kentucky this season. After a 24-16 win against Toledo to kick off the year, the Wildcats well just short to Ole Miss 30-23. Kentucky settled for a field goal with just over a minute left in the game, and the Rebels ran out the clock. The Wildcats bounced back in Week 3 with a 48-23 win against Eastern Michigan.
Players to watch: Gamecocks and Wildcats
South Carolina
LaNorris Sellers, QB: Sellers came back from injury and looked comfortable against the Tigers. He completed 18 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns, but also had 10 rushes for minus-28 yards. He’ll need his offensive line and running backs to boost the run game if those passing numbers will convert to wins in the future.
Vicari Swain, DB: Swain’s historic special teams play hasn’t limited his production on defense. He’s arguably the Gamecocks’ best tackler and has been solid in pass coverage as well. He finished the Mizzou game with 10 tackles (eight solo), a tackle for loss and a pass breakup.
Kentucky
Cutter Boley, QB: Boley, a redshirt freshman, started the season as the backup to Texas A&M and Incarnate Word transfer Zach Calzada. But after the fifth-year senior was pulled mid-game against Ole Miss due to a shoulder injury, Boley took over and remained the starter against Eastern Michigan. He threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns on 12 attempts against the Eagles. Boley is likely to get the start against USC.
Mi’Quise Humphrey-Grace, DL: Humphrey-Grace left midway through Kentucky’s season opener against Toledo and was seen in a walking boot on the sideline. However, he was active against Ole Miss and has recorded four tackles in each of the last two games. The junior transfer from South Dakota picked up his first sack of the year against Eastern Michigan. With a week of rest to get fully healthy, he could make an impact against USC’s struggling offensive line.
