Shane Beamer shares update on Nyck Harbor after WR’s postgame hospital visit
Nyck Harbor had quite the Saturday.
Despite South Carolina’s 31-30 loss to No. 3 Texas A&M, the Gamecocks wide receiver had one of his most-productive games of the season, catching three passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. He also got pushed and yelled at by a Texas state trooper and spent the night in a College Station hospital.
In the first half, Harbor caught a screen and his track instincts took over. He blew ahead of three Texas A&M defenders, scoring an 80-yard touchdown and then continuing up into the tunnel rather than trying to come to a quick stop and risk injury. Walking from the tunnel back to the field, a Texas State Trooper bumped Harbor and his teammates, then pointed and yelled at them.
It didn’t escalate, but the officer was relieved of his duties for the day and everyone from Stephen A. Smith to LeBron James weighed in.
Then, a few hours later on the Gamecocks’ final drive, Harbor hauled in an 18-yard pass on fourth-and-6. For a moment, he saved the game. But as his back hit the ground hard, the Aggies’ defender fell on his chest.
Harbor was checked out by South Carolina’s trainers in the medical tent and then — “from a precautionary standpoint,” coach Shane Beamer said — was brought to a hospital.
On his weekly teleconference on Sunday evening, Beamer noted that Harbor spent Saturday night in a College Station hospital but flew back to Columbia on Sunday morning.
“He’s back in the building right now,” Beamer said. “Proud of him. Hate that he went through that, but glad he’s back here and glad that everything is OK.”
Beamer did not specify what kind of injury Harbor is dealing with.
He added that the statuses for Harbor and cornerback Brandon Cisse (who was also hurt against the Aggies) to play on Saturday against Coastal Carolina are still up in the air.
“We’ll see how the week goes (for) both those guys,” Beamer said.
