Quick advice about that South Carolina-Georgia betting line

Sports gambling might never be legal in South Carolina. It certainly won’t be legal by Sept. 8, so all advice listed here remains for entertainment purposes only, but something caught my eye this week.

The Gamecocks are 11-point underdogs against Georgia in the second week of the season, according to “games of the year” odds released by South Point Hotel & Casino sportsbook this week. Last year, the Bulldogs beat South Carolina by 14 points. That Georgia team was better than this one will be in the Week 2 of the 2018 season. That game was played in Sanford Stadium.

The past five times South Carolina has hosted the Bulldogs in Williams-Brice Stadium, where the teams will play this year, the Gamecocks have won twice and outscored Georgia 108-90 in combined score. This is not to suggest the Gamecocks will beat the Bulldogs this season. They likely will not.

Georgia is the defending conference champion and national runner-up, but South Carolina should be better than it was a year ago and will be playing at home. The Gamecocks are transitioning to a more up-tempo offense because coach Will Muschamp has come to believe that it’s the best way, and maybe the only way, to move the ball against the elite defenses he faces. This game will be the first time that South Carolina fully unveils its new system run by Bryan McClendon, no matter what they all say about the importance of the Coastal Carolina game.

My guess is this line will be single digits by the time game week arrives, so if you’re into this kind of entertainment, I’d suggest taking a look at this number now.
