South Carolina men’s basketball coach Lamont Paris has lost a prized transfer portal recruit mere weeks after he landed him in the first place.

Former North Dakota guard Treysen Eaglestaff has decommitted from South Carolina, a team source confirmed to The State on Wednesday. Eaglestaff committed to USC on March 30 and the Gamecocks announced his signing on April 1.

With Eaglestaff breaking his committing from the Gamecocks, two new schools expected to be in the mix are Kentucky and West Virginia, the source said.

Eaglestaff’s decommitment was first reported by Jeff Goodman of Field of 68.

“This was a difficult decision, but after discussing this with my family this is the best course of action for my future,” Eaglestaff told Goodman. “Thank you to Coach Paris and the South Carolina staff for recruiting me during this process.”

Eaglestaff was an All-Summit league selection after averaging 18.9 points a game. He scored a career-high 51 points against South Dakota State in the Summit League tournament earlier this month and also had 40 against Alabama in December.

He ranked No. 46 nationally in points per game.

Eaglestaff previously told The State he canceled visits to Gonzaga, Kansas and Kentucky to commit to South Carolina. While NIL was not his top priority in his recruitment, he told The State the Gamecocks were able to make a competitive offer.

“Absolutely. They could definitely compete with anyone that was hitting me up,” Eaglestaff said of USC’s NIL capacity. “From what I heard, too, it got a lot better.”

With Eaglestaff’s departure, South Carolina’s transfer portal class shrinks back to four players: C Christ Essandoko (Providence), G Meechie Johnson (Ohio State), G Kobe Knox (South Florida) and F Elijah Strong (Boston College).
