South Carolina adds to 2019 class with new in-state signee Xavier Legette
South Carolina football came out of the early singing day with only two wide receiver signees. The Gamecocks appear to have fixed that.
In-state athlete Xavier Legette signed with USC and Will Muschamp on Friday night.
After Muschamp announced a new commit with a “#SpursUp” tweet, Legette announced with his own tweet. Soon after, the school announced the signing.
The Mullins High School athletic quarterback will play wide receiver with the Gamecocks. He had been walking a delicate line, considering a greyshirt offer, looking at smaller schools who would give him an immediate scholarship and hearing USC might come through with a spot for next year.
He will enroll in the summer.
“Coach Muschamp called me yesterday (Thursday) and when he first got on the phone he asked me was I ready to be a Gamecock,” Legette said. “He didn’t tell me they had made a way for me to become a Gamecock, he just asked me. And then he started breaking everything down to me and telling me how they had made a way.”
The 6-foot-2, 190 pounder also has offers from Tennessee, Coastal Carolina and Tulane. He’s the No. 700 player nationally in the 247 Sports composite rankings, the No. 8 player in South Carolina and No. 32 athlete.
USC was always where he wanted to be and given the chance to join the program now, he didn’t hesitate giving his commitment to Muschamp Thursday night and getting his signed LOI in on Friday.
“It’s the best place for me,” he said “It’s very close to where I’m from, Mullins, and my family will get to see me more often than they would if I were to go anywhere else.”
As a quarterback this season, he ran for 1,826 yards and 19 touchdowns and passed for 887 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led the Auctioneers to an 8-2 record and the second round of the playoffs.
This year’s class already includes 4-star wide receiver Keveon Mullins and 3-star wide receiver Tyquan Johnson.
Legette is the 19th signee of the period. USC has four more spots in the class and is likely looking for one more offensive lineman and at least two more defensive backs.
