Former Gamecock to defend 3-point, skills challenge titles at WNBA All-Star weekend
Former South Carolina women’s basketball player Allisha Gray is looking to defend several WNBA All-Star Weekend challenge titles on Friday night.
Gray will participate in the 3-Point Contest as well as the Skills Challenge again this year after she won both events during last year’s WNBA All-Star Weekend. She’s the only player in WNBA history to achieve the feat.
Gray will face off with Lexie Hull (Indiana Fever), Sonia Citron (Washington Mystics), Sabrina Ionescu (New York Liberty) and Kelsey Plum (Los Angeles Sparks) in the 3-point Contest. During last year’s event, Gray recorded a first-round score of 23 and won after she finished the final round with a score of 22.
In this year’s Skills Challenge, Gray will match up with Natasha Cloud (New York Liberty), Skylar Diggins (Seattle Storm), Erica Wheeler (Seattle Storm) and Courtney Williams (Minnesota Lynx). The contestants will compete in a timed obstacle course that tests a player’s dribbling, passing and shooting skills. Last year, Gray won the competition after finishing the challenge in 32.1 seconds during the final round.
Both the Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest will be broadcast by ESPN on Friday starting at 8 p.m. The various WNBA All-Star Weekend events are taking place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, home of the Fever.
A look at Gray’s success this season
Gray is having a stellar season for the Atlanta Dream.
She’ll make her first start in the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday after earning the third-straight All-Star nod of her career. Gray was No. 1 in media and player votes among guards.
Gray is averaging a career-high 18.6 points, 3.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game. Those numbers helped her earn Eastern Conference Player of the Month in May and June. Gray is the first Atlanta Dream player to win a player of the month award twice in one season. She’s also the first Eastern Conference player since 2019 to earn back-to-back monthly honors to start a season.
