Former Gamecock Ta’Niya Latson back in WNBA with new team
It didn’t take too long for Ta’Niya Latson to find a new home in the WNBA.
Latson signed a development player contract with the Las Vegas Aces, the team announced late Wednesday. The move comes a few days after Latson was waived by the Los Angeles Sparks on July 6.
Development contracts are new to the WNBA this season and are for players with up to three years of WNBA service. Latson can participate in all the Aces’ training sessions, practices and travel but can only be on the active roster for 12 games in 2026.
Latson was drafted by the Sparks with the No. 20 overall pick in the second round of the 2026 WNBA Draft. She played in 10 games this season for the Sparks and averaged 1.8 points in five minutes of action during those contests.
She last played for the Sparks on June 27 against the Indiana Fever. Latson’s best game came against the Minnesota Lynx on June 17 — she scored six points and tallied three rebounds and two assists off the bench.
Latson is one of two former Gamecocks to be waived by the Sparks before mid-way point of the season. Sania Feagin was waived by LA in late June but, like Latson, found herself a new home with the Portland Fire on a development contract a few days later.
South Carolina has 13 players in the WNBA with Latson’s return to the league. Latson will team up with four-time league MVP and Gamecock legend A’ja Wilson in Las Vegas. The Aces are half a game out of first place in the Western Conference standings with a 15-6 record this season.
